Mathieu O’Neil is Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Canberra’s News & Media Research Centre, where he leads the Critical Conversations Lab, and Honorary Associate Professor of Sociology at the Australian National University, where he contributed to the founding of the Virtual Observatory for the Study of Online Networks. He researches the political economy of commons-based peer production, media literacy in the attention economy and the adoption of causes and innovations in the online environment. He founded the Journal of Peer Production in 2010 and was lead editor of the Handbook of Peer Production (Wiley, 2021). In 2021 he founded the Digital Commons Policy Council think tank.
